2003 Orlando Meeting

The IRA Phonics Special Interest Group held its second official meeting last May in Orlando, Florida. We had two terrific speakers, Dr. Grace Haskins and Dr. John Shefelbine. The topic of Grace Haskins’s presentation was The Spelling/Reading Connection: How Do We Achieve It? Haskins, who has studied reading and spelling for many years and is the author of The Spel-Lang Tree, shared information about a word study program for primary grades.

Dr. John Shefelbine, a professor in the Department of Teacher Education at California State University, Sacramento, spoke on the topic of Strategies for Decoding and Spelling Polysyllabic Words. Dr. Shefelbine, widely known as a literacy leader and charismatic public speaker, provided an excellent presentation on syllabication strategies and methods for teaching them to students.

Remember, it’s free! This SIG does not charge! E-mail our secretary with your name and IRA number: rireland@mail.mcps.org. Remember, membership in the International Reading Association’s Phonics Special Interest Group is free.

We Love Phonics
Members of the Phonics Special Interest group and non-member interested folks are invited to join the WeLovePhonics@yahoogroups.com e-mail list. Like a listserv, or old-fashioned party line, when a member of this group sends out an e-mail, the message goes out to all other members. Membership registration in the e-mail group can only be initiated by the moderator. If you wish to join, please send your request via e-mail to Lynn Gordon at Lynn.Gordon@csun.edu.
